Engineering Calculation Standards & Densities
Theoretical weight estimations in steel construction and mechanical engineering are calculated using standard material densities defined by ASTM, ASME, DIN, and EN standards:
- Carbon Steel: Standard density of 7,850 kg/m³ (0.2836 lb/in³) per ASTM A36, A106, A516.
- Stainless Steel: Austenitic grades (304/316L) use 7,930 kg/m³ (0.286 lb/in³).
- Aluminum Alloys: Structural 6061/6082 series use 2,700 kg/m³ (0.0975 lb/in³).
Standard Calculation Formulas
-
Seamless & Welded Circular Pipe Weight Formula:
W (kg/m) = 0.0246615 × (Outer Diameter - Wall Thickness) × Wall Thickness -
Steel Sheet & Plate Weight Formula:
W (kg) = Length (m) × Width (m) × Thickness (mm) × 7.85 -
Solid Round Bar Weight Formula:
W (kg/m) = Diameter² (mm) × 0.006165
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Theoretical weight is calculated using exact nominal dimensions. Actual weight at the mill scale varies within permissible manufacturing tolerances specified by ASTM A6 / ASME SA53 standards (typically ±5% to ±10% wall thickness tolerance and rolling variations).
Asia Steel provides EN 10204 3.1 Mill Test Certificates (MTC) for all supplied materials. Explore our Product Catalog for detailed dimensions or inspect completed projects on our Projects Portfolio.
